The last chapters describe the Arab invasion. 7th century History of Armenia, describing the tug of war by Byzantium and Iran for control of Armenia. The author of the History attributed to Sebeos, although written in Armenian, does not specifically identify Heraclius as Armenian, which may be a meaningless ethnic designation for that historical context, or identify. Is not in principle difficult to find a Byzantine commander in Africa who had experience and origins in the east. Further reading lists, including articles, will be handed out in the package to be given to all students. The following are key titles on which secondary reading will be based.
